Tactics of Civic Care awarded Hans Hollein Project Grant 2025
Juergen Benson-Strohmayer is the recipient of the Hans Hollein Project Grant 2025 for Tactics of Civic Care, an ongoing research project that approaches architecture not as a finished object, but as a dynamic civic instrument.
Developed across long-term architectural work in West Africa and Europe, the research investigates architecture as care infrastructure: adaptive, incremental, and shaped through collective use. Ongoing work at the crazinisT artisT studiO compleX (TTOX) in Kumasi serves as one of several sites where these ideas are tested at architectural, social, and territorial scales, asking how space can operate simultaneously as performance, refuge, and political presence.
Over the coming months, Tactics of Civic Care will unfold through material studies, spatial prototypes, and public actions across Ghana and Europe, extending architecture into the realm of tactics rather than monuments.
The Hans Hollein Project Grant (Hans-Hollein-Projektstipendium) is commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport. The jury for the 2025 edition comprised Theresa Krenn, Heidi Pretterhofer, and Jakob Sellaoui.
